News release from DHEC dated May 25, 2000. Memo about tick illnesses. The main focus is Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, although it does mention Lyme and Ehrlichiosis. Please note, Babesia, another tick-borne illness, is on the rise. Refer to the next paragraph about the under reporting of Lyme disease.

DHEC's field study reports for 1996-1997. During this study, infected ticks were found in Beaufort, Calhoun, Orangeburg and Charleston Counties. During 1997, they collected 126 additional ticks, but no outcome of the testing. The map shows the counties of: Allendale, Barnwell, Aiken, Claredon, Sumter, Richland, Dillon, Chesterfield, Greenwood and McCormick tested negative. Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties are marked "negative", however, the text does state the testing was positive. All other counties blank for testing. Prior to this testing, no statewide risk assessment had been performed in S.C. They state that "continued tick collections and testing is regarded as important, because Lyme disease in humans is often under-diagnosed, or empirically treated, and certainly under-reported to DHEC epidemiologists." Text ony version can also be found here.
